Review: Raylan – a novel by Elmore Leonard

From Elmore Leonard, the undisputed king of crime writers, newest book is called Raylan – A Novel. Our protagonist, and book’s namesake, is a U.S. Marshall with an affable yet simple way about him, and a steely resolve that few are willing to test. Returning to his

The book opens with Raylan being sent to retrieve a wanted felon on a federal warrant. Upon finding his man, Raylan discovers his target in a hotel bathtub filled with ice. It quickly becomes obvious he is missing his kidneys, and not done by an amateur, either. To complicate things, the kidneys were removed from the front, like they do in the hospital.

Raylan needs to track down why this is happening, and in the process nearly becomes a victim himself!

Elmore Leonard is the living master of the modern crime novel. His heroes, as well as his villains, are as real as you or I. You feel a kinship with the characters, you know them, perhaps their names are different, but you definitely know them. Some people are evil just because, some break bad simply by circumstance. Some people are born heroes, some find their moment of redemption in the 11th hour, and follow it through.

Redemption and finding your self on the right side of right seemed to be a theme throughout the book.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book, and recommend it to anyone who’s a fan of the detective/sheriff genre.

  1. Your book review sounded rather similar to a movie I saw a few years back, with Jason Statham (sp??) in which he worked for an organization that “removed” internal organs you had purchased through them and then defaulted on the payment. In the movie, he himself finds himself to be a recipient of an organ (though it was not his choice) and eventually ends up defaulting on the payments himself – hence becoming the hunted instead of the hunter. I can’t seem to recall the name of it. I wonder if maybe the book was based on the movie, or vice versa.
